HAEMORRHAGIC SEPTICAEMIA IN CATTLE

Haemorrhagic septicaemia is an acute septicaemic disease occurring in cattle, buffalo, camel, sheep, goat and pig. It is usually seen after a stress like, driving, transporting, shipping etc.

The disease is characterized by high rise of temperature, depression and presence of multiple haemorrhages and signs of pneumonia, pleuritis, pericarditis and arthritis.

ETIOLOGY: Haemorrhagic septicaemia is caused by Pasteurella multocida type-1 organism.

SUSCEPTIBLE HOSTS: Cattles and buffaloes are most susceptible. Young growing cattle in age group of 6 months to 2 years, sheep, goats, pigs do suffer from the disease.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION: Haemorrhagic septicaemia can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals.

Pneumonic pasteurellosis occur through inhalation of contaminated droplets.

Carrier animals can harbour the infective organisms in nasopharynx and help in spreading the disease through droplet infection or ingestion. Transmission through saliva is also possible. Young animals can get infection while sucking the milk. 

SYMPTOMS:

Cattles and buffalo:

            Incubation period: 2-5 days

            -fever with temperature of 104-107 degree Celsius.

            -shivering

            -profuse salivation

            -lachrymation

            -nasal discharge

            -conjunctivitis

            -deep red mucous membrane

            -sharp drop in milk

            -abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dysentery.

            -rapid respiration

Sheep and goat:

            -it is not clearly established

            -pneumonic signs can be seen

            – septicaemic condition may not be observed

            -high rise in temperature

            -depression

            -salivation

            -lachrymation

            -mucopurulent nasal discharge

            -death in 24-48 hours

Pigs:

            -dull and depression

            -copious nasal discharge

            -temperature (104-107 degree Celsius)

Dog and cat:

            -usually remain as symptomless carrier.

HOMOEOPATHIC MANGEMNENT:

Pyrogenium: septic fevers, latent pyogenic conditions, temperature rises rapidly, sweating does not fall in temperature.

Belladonna: it helps in treatment by reducing symptoms of high fever, rapid heart rate and facial redness. High fever with lack of thirst and icy cold sensation in feet.

Lachesis: helps in management of fever and helps to reduce embolism. Restlessness, swelling and puffiness of face with purplish discoloration, intermittent fevers, fever with chills.

Arsenicum album: weakness and irritability, tiredness after small activities, intermittent fevers, icy coldness of body, rapid pulse rate in morning.

Baptisia: difficulty in breathing due to compressed feeling in lungs. Fever with chills, rheumatic pains, and generalized soreness in body. It helps reduce symptoms such as hot skin and ARDS.
